Endodontics is the discipline which deals with disease of the roots and tissues around the tooth. More commonly referred to as ‘root canal treatment’, endodontics is about ensuring your teeth have healthy foundations.
When a tooth is damaged through decay, cracks or trauma, bacteria make their way towards the ‘root canal’ system inside the tooth. The bacteria eventually cause the nerve and blood vessels to die and this soon leads to dental pain and infection. Root canal treatment aims to remove this bacteria and allow your immune system to heal the damage. Normally, you would then have a crown placed on top to protect the tooth and allow you to use it again. Saving your own natural tooth where possible is always recommended and is vital to the function of your dentition and the stability of your bite and appearance.
